I'm the first person in my family to be born outside of Brazil, and I was raised in the Bronx. I came to Church Street Boxing gym two years ago to learn how to defend myself after being in an abusive relationship. Through boxing, I've gained so much more than just self defense; it gives me confidence, strength and in some ways even serenity, there's not much room to focus on other things when you're in the ring. I also love the community I found here; so many people hear Boxer and think big scary mean people- but I have met some of the most incredible people from all walks of life, all the trainers and members are all in this together.
I myself am a nanny and an actress, not exactly someone you'd imagine getting black eyes and throwing jabs! I think it's important to do things that are different, and more importantly things that scare you. I'd be lying if I said I'm not scared of getting hit in the face, but I'm doing this by choice, when so many go through much worse without a choice. I think if I can get up there and do something that scares me- something, unexpected of my character, it will inspire people to watch, which draws attention to the bigger picture and what is truly important: the charities we are raising funds for!
Boxing has really changed my life; having my first fight happen ON my birthday is the best way for me to pay homage to what's it's done for me after all this time.
