Some startling statistics:
*Greater than 30 million people of all ages and all genders suffer from an eating disorder in the US alone.
*Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness.
*Only 1 in 10 men and women with eating disorders receive treatment.
*Only 35% of people that receive treatment for eating disorders get treatment at a specialized facility for eating disorders.
* In judged sports – sports that score participants – prevalence of eating disorders is 13% (compared with 3% in refereed sports).
* Female athletes in aesthetic sports (e.g. gynmastics, ballet, figure skating) found to be at the highest risk for eating disorders.
*The body type portrayed in advertising as the ideal is possessed naturally by only 5% of American females.
* 35% of “normal dieters” progress to pathological dieting. Of those, 20-25% progress to partial or full-syndrome eating disorders.
Another eating disorder awareness group (NEDA) has a theme for many of their walks and events... "Everybody Knows Somebody"
This theme is very relevant for Merrick's Walk as well. Whether or not you know that you know, you still do know somebody that has a history of an eating disorder or is receiving treatment for an eating disorder or is secretly suffering from an eating disorder day in and day out. At Motion Stability this could be even more true than for your "average Joe." Physical therapists treat athletes and dancers of all levels, ages, and genders that are at risk for developing an eating disorder. One (or more) of those patients could already be suffering from an eating disorder. Often, physical therapists are the first to pick up on some of the Red Flags that could help a person recieve the help they need for an eating disorder.
Please join the Mercer Physcial Therapy Team in helping to raise awareness about eating disorders and raise money to assist EDIN in their good work in the ATL area making eating disorder treatment easily available and accessable to those who need it!!
Remember... Everybody Knows Somebody... Help Mercer PT help EDIN in assisting all those "Somebodys" get the help they need to live happy and healthy lives!"
