EVENT: San Francisco Marathon 2014

EVENT DATE: Jul 27, 2014

THE STORY:

I will be running the 2014 San Francisco Marathon's "Worth the Hurt" 52.4-mile Double Marathon on July 27th. I'll run the full marathon course in reverse starting at midnight, and I'll then run it in the normal direction with everyone else at 5:30am. I am running for Baylor Fredrickson to raise money for the Asian American Donor Program (AADP) who are working hard to help Bay find a bone marrow donor!

Baylor is a cheerful and energetic 8-year-old. He battled leukemia two years ago and beat it! The family recently found out he relapsed. Baylor is undergoing treatment, but he will need a bone marrow transplant (and matching marrow donor) to survive. Since matching is based on ethnicity, he will most likely need a mixed race donor who is also Asian and Caucasian.

I first heard about Bay's need for a bone marrow donor from a friend of mine who shared a detailed Facebook post from Michael Lewis, author of the bestselling book, Moneyball, and also as it turns out, Bay's little league coach! About an hour later, I got a call from my mom after her friend had reached out to her with details about the same boy, Baylor. It turns out that her daughter knows Baylor and his family.  She reached out to my mom knowing that I happen to be half Asian (Japanese) and half Caucasian (Scottish, Irish, Welsh, German, etc.) and would be a possible match for Baylor given that he is half Japanese and half German.

I immediately reached out to AADP, requested a donor kit, sent it back, (update: on July 18th, I received an update that my samples are being tested), and am now currently waiting to find out if I'm a potential match.  The odds of being a match (and chosen) for a bone marrow transplant are around 1 in 500, so it's extremely important that we continue to build the donor pool to help Bay and others like Bay whose lives can be saved with the help of a donor.

Please join me to #Rally4Bay by making a generous donation using the blue DONATE TO THIS FUNDRAISER button on the screen.  This is my very first race fundraiser, and I need your support and help to make it a success.  With your help, we have raised nearly $1,500 so far in just two weeks!!  THANK YOU!!  Let's see if we can reach $2,000.

And, please share my fundraiser page with all your friends, family, colleagues, social media, etc. and compel them to help chip in for Bay!

In addition, I strongly encourage you to consider becoming a bone marrow donor if you're not already signed up - you could be the one to save a life!!

About me:

I am an ultramarathoner and endurance runner (in my free time) and am currently training to run a 200-mile mountain trail race around Lake Tahoe in early September called the Tahoe 200 (http://www.tahoe200.com).  I work in IT, have two cats named Miso and Danger, and currently reside in San Diego.  I grew up in Novato (Marin County), which is about a 15-minute drive north of the Golden Gate Bridge.  I will always consider San Francisco as "the city," and I consider running the SF Marathon to be a homecoming event for me. This year will be my 3rd straight year running the SF Marathon and first year running it backwards and forwards through the "Worth the Hurt" challenge.

I started running nearly 4 years ago, and I've completed 23 marathons and 13 ultramarathons (and counting), including 5 races of 100 miles or more. I'm also a "streak" runner, meaning that I run every day for at least 2 miles, and I've recently surpassed over 1,300 consecutive days of running. I've combined running with other phyiscal activities along with healthier eating habits, and I've lost 40+ lbs of excess weight in the process.  I have a great passion for running, and I feel like I'm just getting started!
