In Kenya's Maasai tribes, families are often unable to finance educations for their daughters, and as a result, Maasai girls are married off at 14 or 15 years old, the bride-price received often vital to feeding and providing for the rest of the family. In these societies, child marriage is not a cultural tradition, but rather an economic necessity.
Since 2011, the Amazing Maasai Girls Project, a U.S. 501c3 non-profit organization, has raised funds to send Maasai girls in Kenya's Laikipia North district to high school on 4-year scholarships, both raising the lifetime economic prospects of the girls and their tribes, but also preventing or delaying marriage until they reach the age of maturity, thus decreasing the incidence of infant and maternal mortality that comes from underage girls giving birth, and reducing the economic burden on the community that comes from severe health outcomes.
In July, we will be hosting our 7th annual Amazing Maasai Marathon to raise awareness and funds for girls education in Kenya, and our Global Run fun runs a few months later in dozens of countries around the world. I personally will be returning to Kenya this July to meet with our Amazing Girls (4-year scholarship recipients), and photographing the race. It costs US$2,000 to fund a 4-year scholarship, and since 2012, we have awarded over 60 scholarships and are gradually building an endowment fund. For the cost of a nice meal or a few days' worth of your daily gourmet coffee, you can have a tremendous impact on the lives of talented but financially disadvantaged girls.
