BENEFITING: ACTIONS FOR ANIMALS

THE STORY:

As many of you know, I volunteer abroad on a regular basis with wildlife. In June of this year, I volunteered at an Amazon rainforest sanctuary in Puerto Maldonado, Peru. I prepared food for howler and night monkeys, peccaries, toucans, parrots, a deer and an adorable tamarin. I cleaned enclosures, foraged to collect and cut leaves for the monkeys, and even helped repair enclosures. This was necessary because all of the enclosures are made of wood (except one). Over the years, the rain has weakened the wood. To help keep the animals safe – and keep the shelter operating – I am raising money to replace the wooden enclosures with chain-link fencing. Unlike wood fences that require regular maintenance due to wear and tear against the elements, chain link fences don’t require much additional care and will last for years to come. Chain link does not need to be stained, painted or sealed. I'd also like to help replace the wood flooring in the quarantine space and the food preparation area with concrete. As with the enclosures, the wood starts to rot and break down from the rain and constant moisture of the rainforest. It makes walking on these surfaces dangerous for the staff and volunteers (I know, from slipping more than a few times). In addition, I would like to replace the shelter's vehicle which has broken down. A vehicle is very important to the running of the shelter. It's used for many tasks, such as: making weekly food runs for the animals, transporting animals to the veterinary hospital when needed, and picking up and dropping off volunteers at the airport. The sanctuary is 40 minutes from town, and currently the founder is relying on a motorbike and taxis. Lastly, I would like to provide some financial support for food and medicine for the animals, and staff, over the next four months. The shelter relies heavily on volunteers (and their donations), and due to the approaching rainy season, they have few volunteers.

I have worked with the founder of the shelter to get estimates of costs. Materials such as fencing are much more expensive in Peru, as they have to come from the capital Lima - by road - across the Andes Mountains to the Amazon. The costs are listed below. The price for the used vehicle is an average for used vehicles in Peru.

Project Goals:
Tortoise enclosure ($1,500)
Parrot enclosure ($2,000)
Monkey enclosure ($2,500)
Peccary enclosure (small) ($2,000)
Peccary enclosure (large) ($3,500)
Concrete floor for quarantine area ($1,400)
Concrete floor for food prep area ($1,400)
Used vehicle ($10,000)

One month of medicines (average) ($200)
One week of food for shelter animals ($400)
One month of staff salaries (2) ($1000)

Magali, the founder of the shelter, has donated all of her savings to the building and running of this shelter. She lives on-site and will not profit personally from this fund-raiser.

Please note, 100% of the donations will be allocated to the project; however, the fund-raising platform charges Actions for Animals 3%, so actually, 97% of your donation will go to this project.

Your donation to Actions for Animals, a US-Based 501(c)3 charitable organization, through CrowdRise is 100% tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. You’ll automatically receive an email receipt that meets the IRS requirements for a record of your donation.

Thank you for your time and consideration - we would greatly appreciate your generous donation.
