I used to volunteer for an AIDS hospice when I was in Houston, providing bedside care for people in their last days. HIV is preventable. Unfortunately, social stigma surrounding sex combined with lack of access to health care, continue to be contributing factors to poor health outcomes such as deaths resulting from AIDS complications. Additionally, while I was volunteering, the entire nation watched as Texas was stripping people from having access to comprehensive reproductive health care. Texas went from having 41 abortion clinics down to 19 after HB 2. Without the recent Supreme Court ruling, the number of abortion clinics serving the entire state would have been less than 9. To make matters worse, my home state defunded Planned Parenthood. I have friends and family members that depend on services at Planned Parenthood. To witness Texas' attack on reproductive health was to watch my state lower the quality of life for people I know. I couldn't let misogyny, religious fervor, and ignorance force the people I love to overcome insurmountable barriers to get basic health care services such as pap smears and STI testing. Low income people deserve better. Women deserve better. My loved ones deserve better. So I left Texas for DC to start my political journey in reproductive health. Shortly afterwards, I was accepted into the Developing Leaders Program with Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington. I really wanted to tie my culture with this program. Being pro-choice and being a person of faith are not mutually exclusive values. As a Hindu, this one of the biggest holidays in my culture is Diwali and it is only 30 days away. Oftentimes, friends and family members exchange gifts. Additionally, this is a time for reflection and good will. I would like to use this occasion to give back to the DMV community by raising funds for PPMW. What better way to show good will than by donating to a charity? If 25 of my friends and family donate 20 bucks, I will reach my fundraising goal! Donate only if you can. I'm asking for $20 from each person. However, if you can't donate 20 give what you can, even if it's a dollar. Every coin counts! Donating more would be greatly appreciated as well! If you feel as passionately as I do about these issues, show some love tp your favorite Hindu by donating to PPMW. Celebrate Diwali with me on October 30th by donating to support reproductive health!
