BENEFITING: EASTER SEALS ALABAMA INC
EVENT DATE: Oct 15, 2016
My name is Ernest Ekpoh. My friends here at SCSEP call me Mr. E. I am 61 years old and a resident of Montgomery, Alabama, since 1981. Originally, I was born in a little town of Ikot Mbong, Onna, Akwa Ibom State, in the Southeastern part of Nigeria, West Africa. Born into a large Christian family, with both mother and father, I am the second of the five males and also of the nine siblings. My family has great faith in God, believes in education and hard work, therefore, these core values have been the driving force in my up bring and in believing that any achievement in life comes only through faith in God, education, and hard work. I am married to a beautiful wife, Brenda, and blessed with four children. I had my Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering, from Alabama A&M University, and currently working on my Masters of Rehabilitation Counseling in the School of Graduate Studies at Alabama State University, Montgomery, AL.
My relationship with SCSEP (Senior Community Service Employment Program), at Easter Seals Central Alabama here in Montgomery has been part of my life’s journey that began in July 2013, after recovering from Cancer. I am a Cancer Survivor and I came to the SCSEP program as part of my Vocational Rehabilitation referral process by my rehabilitation counselor from Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services (ADRS). There are many Job Readiness, Skills Development, and training opportunities here at SCSEP. So when I came into the program, I took advantage of the many training programs from Home Health, Certified Nursing Assistance, Technical Assistance Trainee with the C.A.R.E Project, and Computer Skills Training, to being a Math Instructor at a local private High School. SCSEP has opened many doors for our seniors since its inception in 2003. The On-the-Job training program with the Host Agencies has also been a very successful part of this program. SCSEP provides hope for our seniors who may have otherwise lost self-confidence due to increased technology in the 21st Century and current trend in the workforce. However, with the intense training received here at SCSEP, participants are prepared and ready in three to six months to re-enter the workforce of their choice.
There are many other success stories like mine. We encourage our seniors to come and join us at SCSEP. If you are 55 years or older, willing to learn, and ready to work to achieve self-independence and more, then the sky is the limit for our qualified seniors. Come in, meet people, learn new things, and have fun.
