Running for a Reason
The latest numbers from a national report on the health of our country left a lot to be desired for my beloved Oklahoma. Diabetes and cardiovascular disease is on the rise among us, one in three of our children are either overweight or obese and we’re on track to be the most obese state by 2018. Talk about depressing.
Fueled by the desire to find meaning in my grandmother’s death from obesity, my own journey to shed 100 pounds four years ago quickly turned into something so much bigger than winning back my own health--it ignited a passion inside me to become a powerful advocate for the obesity epidemic that’s threatening to shorten the lives of this generation of Oklahoma children.
Reversing the childhood obesity epidemic, especially in Oklahoma, is an issue about which I’m extremely passionate and a fight that’s extremely personal to me. I have two nephews and a niece in my life whom I want to see live long, happy and healthy lives. And I love Oklahoma, and want to see Oklahoma become the best state in the nation in which to live, work and raise a family. Our people are top notch--we’re smart, creative, hard-working and genuine. And our cities have so much to offer in terms of quality of life. But I know as long as we continue to top the lists of most sick, most obese and least active states in the country, we will never reach our full potential.
My mentor, Jillian Michaels, often says, “Your health is the foundation from which the rest of your life is built.” and I couldn’t agree more. While I believe this is true of an individual's life, I believe it can also be applied to a nation, a state, a city, a neighborhood and a family. Creating a culture in our country and in our states and in the towns in which our families live, can give us all a strong foundation from which to build exceptional lives and give our children the opportunity to become all they're meant to become in this world.
I’ve spent the last four years tearing down the unhealthiness in my life and replacing it with a strong and healthy foundation. Doing so lead me to start my own wellness company and become the director of a statewide iniatiative to end the childhood obesity epidemic in Oklahoma. It's also brought amazing opportunities for me to share my passion for living well with others. I believe the time is now to elevate the conversation to a larger audience and help my state build a strong foundation of health for the families who call Oklahoma home. I believe this starts with educating and empowering the youngest generation of Oklahomans to make the healthiest choices possible and that is why I believe strongly in the work of the Oklahoma Fit Kids Coalition and other national groups like the Alliance for a Healthier Generation.
I was honored to be selected to run the 2011 ING New York City Marathon with Team Healthier Generation and I want to continue running for a reason no matter which race I enter. Doing so makes me part of the solution to one of the greatest causes of our lifetime--reversing the childhood obesity epidemic and giving a kid the opportunity to live a long, healthy and happy life.
