HI GUYS! Amazingly enough, I AM attempting to run the marathon this fall after coming back from an injury, and looking to raise $3,000. The way America is looking these days, it's more important than EVER to make sure the kids in our program are empowered, happy, and excited to be at school. I've been on the America SCORES Junior Board for about two years, and I'm about to start teaching my second semester of poetry class to our students. I am thrilled to be a part of the organization that uses my two favorite things--poetry and sports--to make a difference in the lives of young people across the U.S. Please donate (no amount is too small) and support me running what may be a very slow, painful race this year. I love you all!
A little more info about our program:
Soccer and poetry is not a typical pair, but for America SCORES New York poet-athletes, the combination allows for creativity, self-expression and leadership opportunities on the field, in the classroom and the community.
We impact over 600 students at 14 public schools in Harlem and Washington Heights through free, year-round after-school programming, consisting of:
Soccer – School soccer teams create a sense of belonging and an opportunity to be physically active 4-5 hours per week.
Literacy – At weekly writing workshops, our poet-athletes develop literacy skills, practice self-expression and produce original works of poetry.
Community – Regular soccer games, poetry slams and service projects celebrate student achievement and build community.
The result: SCORES students are stronger, smarter and happier.
We have a waitlist of public schools that desperately need innovative after-school enrichment – help us reach more students like Jeremy!
