THE STORY:

My little sister Katie was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when she was just 13 years old. Only 5% out of the nearly 29 million children and adults living with diabetes in the US have this form of the disease. For those unfamiliar with type 1, it is a condition in which the body does not produce insulin. Our bodies break down the sugars and starches we eat into glucose, which it then uses for energy. Insulin is the hormone that the body needs to get glucose from the bloodstream into the cells of the body. Although the disease may be managed with injections of insulin, over time, type 1 complications can have major adverse effects on organs in the body, including the heart, blood vessels, nerves, eyes and kidneys. Eventually, diabetes complications can be disabling and life-threatening.

One can imagine that at such a young age, the act of managing a lifelong disease with no cure and a host of physical, mental and emotional challenges is an excruciating realization. Katie’s life changed forever that day. Yet despite the challenges she has faced for the past 17 years, she remains strong and determined to not let this disease beat her – and I am so very proud of her.

For the 2017 NYC marathon this coming November, I am running to raise money for the American Diabetes Association. The physical and mental feat the race will require is nothing compared to what Katie and others battling type 1 diabetes must power through in each and every day of their lives. I am very proud to be running to support this cause in honor of Katie.

Please feel free to forward this sponsorship page to anyone you know who has been touched by diabetes, has a huge heart, and/or has deep pockets! Thank you so much for your contributions.
