BENEFITING: AMERICAN LUNG ASSOCIATION OF THE NORTHEAST
ORGANIZER: AMERICAN LUNG ASSOCIATION OF THE NORTHEAST
On the Friday after my close friend Paul Gugliuzzo's lung reduction surgery and a few weeks later when the lung surgeon addressed Paul's wife and a few others, including me, by saying "Patti I just don't know" - I did not think Paul was going to survive.
Paul checked into Columbia Presbyterian hospital in March of 2016 with the expectation of being home in 3-5 days. Not only didn't he make it home in 3-5 days, he was unconscious for 5 weeks and didn't leave the hospital for 5 months. During much of that time Paul's life was in jeopardy and the doctors did not know if Paul's lungs would ever completely support Paul. In addition, Paul battled multiple bouts with Pneumonia with substantially impaired lungs.
Because of Paul's incredible perseverance, his wife's relentless love and care and the support of his amazing family that stayed by his bedside 24/7 for 5 months, Paul made it and now his lungs are fully repaired and he is almost 100% recovered. During Paul's 5 month stay I spent most Friday night's with Paul to give his family a small reprieve and after watching him battle for his life, through lung complications, pneumonia and all of the other medical complications that I can't even understand, I am inspired to take on a challenge to honor my friend and his amazing battle.
I have never run more than 13 miles but on Sunday, November 5th I will take on the New York City Maration's 26.2 mile course for Paul and inspired by his journey and I will also lead a motivated fundraising campaign for American Lung Association because I saw for myself that without money for research, exceptional equipment and exceptional doctors, nurses and facilities (like those at Columbia Presbyterian), Paul would not have survived.
The picture currently on my site is the day Paul came home from the hospital. I will update the picture periodically with more recent pictures of Paul to show his amazing recovery.
