BENEFITING: American Cancer Society
ORGANIZER: American Cancer Society
EVENT: Tough Mudder Michigan 2017
The American Cancer Society has a special place in Jake and I's heart, and is a charity we are very passionate about. We both have lost love ones we were very close to, to the "monster" we call cancer. Following is a bit of my story with my experience of cancer; In 2005 at age 35, my mother was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer. With NEVER smoking this came as a big shock to our family of 7. At 11 years old, I never in my wildest dreams imagined I would grow up helping my mom fight cancer, from going to chemotherapy appointments with her in Ann Arbor, to draining her lungs of fluid as a sterile procedure in our family living room. Through the 5 year battle, my mother used her diagnoses as a platform to raise awareness. Her mission was to let everyone know cancer can happen to ANYONE; she walked in marathons, headed charity events and ultimately became a team leader in a local Relay for Life. In 2008 "Krissies Hope" Relay of Life team raised over $10,000 for The American Cancer Society. This is when my passion for the organization hit close to home, instead of just words of a mission statement I seen the hard work behind the scenes. I encountered many selfless people looking to put themselves last so they could help others. Having lost my mom in 2010, to cancer I would like to raise at least $5,000 in her name for The American Cancer Society before our event held June 3rd, 2017! Jake and I will be participating in the Michigan Tough Mudder 2017, and we are being sponsored by The American Cancer Society! Perfect match; Right? The Tough Mudder is an event that is focused on team work, with many obstacles on a long course, you are set to overcome together to get to the finish line, much like cancer!
