I cannot rememberlife before Diabetes, and before my diagnosis my brother was. Constant testing, needles and perseverance to simply stay alive and healthy....
One can simply say "things could be worse", but until you live it and breathe it or watch someone you love fight daily, it is hard to understand. Sleepless nights, dangerous life & death situations, Diabetes is 24/7/365. No breaks, no vacations, not even for sleep!
As I cheered my friends and husband competing Tough Mudder, my brain started wrapping around "HOW" I could participate...How can I manage without my insulin pump and my constant glucose monitor? Is there a way that I could protect them from the heat, the mud, the obstacles? Like everything that I have faced in life, if there is a way, I will find it. That is the DIABETICS mantra, after all. We CAN do everything that anyone else can....with a lot more planning, prevention and perseverance.
I chose to run the Half in Michigan, where I grew up, and also where my Diabetes journey began. Going home to where it began to prove that after all of these years, I CAN DO THIS. If you know of any child or adult with Diabetes, ask questions, learn about their struggles and their triumphs!
Please donate what you can so that we can find the CURE for this disease. Dare I say, at Middle aged, I have always fought, alongside millions of other diabetics, to find a CURE before I die. It is #1 on my bucket list...to say "I used to have diabetes"...#2 is successfully finishing Tough Mudder! Please donate, all funds will go to the American Diabetes Association.
Let's kick Diabetes in the pants! See you at the FINISH LINE!
