BENEFITING: AMERICAN LIVER FOUNDATION
ORGANIZER: AMERICAN LIVER FOUNDATION
EVENT DATE: Nov 06, 2016
On November 6, 2016 I will be running the NYC Marathon in honor of my mother Judeth Lofria. In 2012 my family lost her to complications from Primary Biliary Cirrhosis, an autoimmune disease of the liver. She was misdiagnosed for 20 plus years and once her diagnosis was finally reached it was too late. Early treatment would have helped her in that her liver would have potentially not been so damaged. Over the last 10 years of her life she went through many different treatments for diseases that they thought she had. Everytime she would go to a different doctor they would tell her it was something else. Finally, in 2011 she went to a doctor that was able to give her the correct diagnosis. In December 2011, she was going in for her transplant workup in a week, 5 days before her appointment she was hospitalized and we were told she was now too sick to be put on the list. We lost her 1 month later. The anguish of having to watch her at her end stage liver disease with no hope for being able to help or save her was extremely difficult for myself and my family. Early diagnosis could have made a huge difference for her. This is the reason that the American Liver Foundation is near and dear to my heart. The funding they receive from donors helps with research that can help others with conditions such as this that may otherwise not have the funding to do research.
Shortly after I lost her I started my fitness journey. I started working out and running. The running helped me clear my head and also enabled me to make new friends that I could confide in and help me through any tough times I was having. Since this time I have run 14 half-marathons and 2 marathons. When I crossed the finish line at my first marathon I immediatly thought of how proud my mom would be of me! Who would have thought that her daughter, someone who never ran before would have just completed 26.2 miles!
I will run 26.2 miles on that day for my mom and every other person living with liver disease!
Please help me reach my goal of $3,000! This will help promote education, support and research for those suffering from liver disease. If it helps even one person or family I will feel that we have made a difference!
