EVENT: 2017 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE: Apr 17, 2017
Who is Carl Gamberdella? I am a father, a husband, a firefighter, a runner, a fitness instructor and an all-around swell guy.
Looking back several years I couldn’t say all of those things. I was extremely overweight and honestly an embarrassment to myself and my family. I topped the scales at a mind boggling 450 pounds. It was time for a change. With the help of the uMass weight center, I underwent gastric bypass surgery, losing a significant amount of weight. I was determined never to go back so I focused on exercising… a lot. I followed several workout programs including P90X and Insanity (eventually becoming an Insanity Instructor). But I found my true passion in the run.
Now I am not build like a runner, I am more like a Mack Truck. Short, squat and muscular. Let’s say I am built for distance not for speed. There is just something about running that I find freeing and refreshing, I love it. I make it a point to run everywhere I travel, so far in almost 25% of all the US states.
I have completed several half marathons and the Newport Full marathon. I honestly had no intention to run another marathon, but something about Boston kept taunting me. I knew I could never qualify on time, remember that not being built for speed thing? So I wanted to find a charity which I connected with and I could raise funds for as a runner, that charity was the Red Cross.
I have several connections to the Red Cross and have a great appreciation for everything that they do (here’s a hint it is far more that collecting blood). During my years at Franklin Pierce College I was fortunate enough to be part of a medical team that traveled to Boston and fielded a medical tent at the marathon for the Red Cross for several years. The atmosphere is electric and the people are awesome. In addition as a per diem /call firefighter in my hometown of Lunenburg, MA I see the support the Red Cross provides to those displaced by tragedy. Finding them shelter, clothing and essential supplies and support to begin picking up the pieces to rebuild.
More recently the American Red Cross has been instrumental in the relief efforts in the wake of Hurricane Matthew. Helping hundreds of thousands of people who were ravaged by the storm and forever had their lives changed.
I am proud to have been selected to run the 2017 Boston Marathon on behalf of the American Red Cross, but I need your help to make it happen. Please take a moment and make a donation on my behalf, no dollar amount is too small (or too big). Every dollar can make a difference.
Funds raised by Team Red Cross benefit the American Red Cross of Massachusetts
