America SCORES Seattle

Write. Play. Achieve.

America SCORES Seattle provides public elementary school students from under-served communities with a free school-based afterschool program combining literacy & athletics.  With teamwork as the unifying value, SCORES inspires youth to lead healthy lifestyles, be engaged students and become agents of change in their communities.

America SCORES is the premier, nationwide youth development non-profit organization that provides urban students in low-income public schools with an outcome-based, innovative and well-integrated program using soccer, poetry, and service learning. Teamwork learned on the soccer field translates to the classroom, where writing workshops in poetry and service-learning empower youth to find their unique voice and inspire them to be leaders in their community.

America SCORES participants receive ten times more exercise than the national average and lower their BMI by 2% by the end of each season. Using soccer as a tool to encourage fitness, sportsmanship, and leadership, America SCORES inspires the life-long appreciation of sports and health-enhancing behaviors like choosing to eat more fruit and vegetables, participating in organized sports and spending less time watching television and playing video games.

The America SCORES model was developed in 1994 in Washington, DC by Julie Kennedy, a public school teacher concerned that her students, lacking constructive after school options, were at risk of gang activity and other dangers after class. Turning to her experience as an athlete, she began teaching her class soccer after school. In bad weather, she turned to her other passion — poetry — and began teaching her students how to write and perform poems. Soon, she noticed her students getting more engaged in class, performing better academically, and spending more time being physically active. By adding a service learning element based on a student-led neighborhood service project, Julie saw that her students developed confidence and learned that they could affect change in their community. Schools across DC took notice and the program expanded citywide.

In 1999, America SCORES grew to a national organization. Today America SCORES impacts more than 7,500 youth each year, in over 140 public schools in fifteen cities nationwide: Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, Dallas, Denver, Los Angeles, Milwaukee, New York, Portland (OR), San Francisco, Seattle, St. Louis, Washington DC and West Contra Costa (CA). More than 44,000 urban youth have benefited from the unique programming of America SCORES.

America SCORES Seattle is be celebrating its 10th year in Seattle Public Schools this school year.

America SCORES Seattle is an official charity partner of the Seattle Sounders FC and is a national 501(c)(3) non-profit organization
