Dear friends and family,
Ten years ago to this day, I lived through one of the most excruciating moments in my life. At the young age of 26, and with no known health risks, I lost my first child, a beautiful healthy baby girl, only 2 weeks before my expected due date. She was due February 14th, would have been my Valentine's day baby, and I had cherished her in the womb, as all mothers do, with future hopes and wishes and plans for the family we would become.
Unfortunately, life has an often heart wrenching way of reminding you that amazing things do not come easily. My husband Dean and I were left heartbroken and aching for the child we never met. Beyond losing our daughter, I had a very complicated delivery, which then required two blood transfusions and an emergency procedure to save my own life. Had I not been in the care of my qualified and devoted OB/GYN and under the auspices of a first class hospital in NYC, I would likely not have survived.
Ten years have passed, and they have been beautiful, magical years, with our little angel watching over us every step of the way. We now have two little boys, Tarek who is turning 9 on February 28th and Zayd who is 6 1/2. They both bless us every single day with their love and presence. In these 10 years, I have discovered the strength a loving husband, family, and dear friends can bring to me, and I have embraced health, fitness and running as my passions, a celebration of some sorts of how powerful a body can be.
I am thrilled to run the NYC Half Marathon this year, on March 15th, out of pure passion for running but also to raise money for Every Mother Counts. Every Mother Counts is a non profit organization that is dedicated to helping women receive adequate pre and postnatal care in underprivileged parts of the world, to prevent maternal death and life threatening complications. You can read more about this unbelievable organization at wwww.everymothercounts.org.
I hope you will join me in donating to this cause dear to my heart. I will be running for all the mothers who have not been as lucky as so many of us. And every mile of the 13.1 miles I run, I will be filled with gratitude for each of you that has helped me become, once again, a confident, strong woman and mother.
