Growing Places Indy is a favorite nonprofit organization of ours in Indianapolis. Their mission is to empower people to cultivate personal, family and community wellness through urban agriculture, food access and mind-body education.
Amy spent the summer participating in GPI's apprenticeship program. Below are some insights that Amy contributed to the Growing Places newsletter, reflecting on her experiences in the program.
"As a holistic health enthusiast and aspiring herbalist, I saw the wonderful impact of plant medicine on people without knowing much about cultivating plants prior to this summer. I applied to the GPI apprenticeship program with the intention of learning to grow food and getting hands-on experience working with plants. What I didn't realize is how much I would grow myself.
Each week we focus on a different chakra and carry its message with us as we do Kundalini yoga, prepare healthy snacks, visit inspiring farms, harvest vegetables, learn farming methods, bike around the city, and communicate truthfully. It has been challenging physically and emotionally, and yet sitting in discomfort instead of avoiding it has made me stronger than I ever thought I could be.
I am sad to see our summer coming to an end, but am eternally grateful for the friendships, life lessons, and farming experience I gained. At the end of this season, just like the plants, I am left with a seed. A seed to keep growing."
