Dear All, Getting a donati…
Dear All,

Getting a donation from you for Opening the Box felt like a beam of sunlight! We're aggressively looking for producers/funders to help us get this play on stage in 2015. If you have any ideas, please email me sarah@sarahshourd.com.

Recent funds generously given will go towards paying actors for a professional reading we have coming up in February at Z Space in San Francisco. With hope this will create the buzz we need.

The struggle to end prolonged solitary confinement is a strategic one that has the potential of forcing the US prison system to shrink and shift towards rehabilitation. As Angels Davis says, "One can look at solitary as a microcosm of the whole (prison) system. The prison is solitary confinement within the society. And how can one expect to create any kind of rehabilitation...in the context of the kind of isolation that happens in these institutions?”

My Huffing Post Live interview about solitary confinement: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/04/25/sarah-shourd-solitary-confinement_n_5213410.html

Please stay in touch, think of me for speaking gigs near you (http://www.sarahshourd.com/booking/) and thank you for your energy and commitment towards greater justice in 2015.

Yours, Sarah Shourd

Dear Friends of Opening the Box,
Thanks for continuing to donate! I'm hard at work doing research for my play on solitary confinement: visiting prisons, talking to activists and experts, meeting with playwrights and corresponding with people in solitary and their families. Our 215th person just donated today and I'm hoping we can to 250 in the next few weeks. Please spread the word about your support for this project and ask your friends to donate if they can. Any amount goes a long way to show the energy behind crucial issue. Huge Thanks, Sarah

Dear Friends, The public ph…
Dear Friends,

The public phase of our fundraising campaign for Opening the Box has officially concluded. Over the course of 42 days, 199 people contributed and we raised well over fifteen thousand dollars. I call that a huge success.

If you haven’t done this yet, please stay in touch by friending us on Facebook: http://facebook.com/openingthebox

Some of you that donated have been personally effected by the cruelty of solitary confinement—either by having survived it yourself or knowing someone else who has—but I would argue that every one of our lives has been profoundly effected by the wide-spread use of torture in our prisons—simply because the result is more violence, crime and division in our communities.

Our Crowdrise site will still be up indefinitely and featured on the Nation Inside: http://nationinside.org/campaign/opening-the-box/. You can even still donate if you haven’t had a chance. I will also be creating a newsletter (and sending that link out soon) so all of you will be able to get updates about the project as it progresses. Also, those of you that took advantage of our VIP ticket offer in the last few weeks, I'll be emailing you your tickets sometime in the next month.

I would never have had the courage to embark on this project without the support I have from all of you—my friends, family, extended community and of course Solitary Watch. Please know that not a single piece of advice, idea or word of encouragement goes unappreciated.

Yours,
Sarah Shourd, Solitary Watch and Team sarah@sarahshourd.com

“I believe in the power of stories to shake us out of our sanguine inhumanity in allowing torture to take place in our lifetime. Proud to be part of what will be an incredible production, run by people I know can make a movement happen.”

"There is no excuse for America to employ such barbarism."

"Donating to a cause in the world's largest economy is not easily done from my third world country base. However, since we all inhabit planet Earth and you feel passionate about the project, I'm in. Good luck!"

"In Memory of my father, Mostafa Naimi, who suffered through the isolation of the mind and body.”

“In memory of my clients.”

“Thanks for reminding us that we are all dehumanized by the practice of solitary confinement.

"Great cause, I've experienced it before...several times..."

Dear Supporters, A whopping…
Dear Supporters,

A whopping 170 people have donated to help fund Opening the Box over the last 42 days. These contributions, however large or small, have helped us reach 47% of our goal and given us a sense of the tremendous support behind us. Please help us reach 200 donators (and at least 50%) by midnight tonight—that’s only 30 more donations in the next 12 hours.

http://www.crowdrise.com/endsolitaryconfinement

Over the last few years, a handful of states across the U.S. have been forced to rethink their policies and curb their use of solitary confinement. Mississippi shut down a 1,200-bed isolation unit, Colorado moved more than 400 prisoners out of solitary, Maine reduced its solitary population by 70 percent and Illinois closes its only supermax (high-security isolation) prison. In the big picture, these changes are small but they prove that educating the public and exposing human rights violations inside our prison system can and does result in real changes.

After a month and a half of non-stop fundraising (with the help of Solitary Watch and my excellent team of friends) and movement building—tomorrow morning I will unplug my computer, pack my suitcase and drive to a small cabin in NE Washington to begin to write this play. When I get back to home 10 days later, I will shift to organizing mode and begin to arrange visits with prisoners currently in solitary across the country.

None of this would be possible without all of you—I can’t wait to see what stories this project will bring to light.

Thank you, Sarah

Dear Friends,

This is the last weekend to donate to Opening the Box, we will wrap-up our fundraising on Monday night. We are inspired, motivated and emboldened by all the incredible support we've recede so far. We ask you to help us get closer to our goal this weekend if you're able: http://www.crowdrise.com/endsolitaryconfinement. Thanks you.

There’s a growing movement to end the horrendous practice of prolonged solitary confinement in our prisons and help create a safer, more humane society. Thank you for doing your part and helping us do ours.

With Thanks,

Hi Everyone, I can't belie…
Hi Everyone,

I can't believe we're already nearing the end of our campaign for OPENING THE BOX. The support we've felt from all of you has been truly incredible. We have something special to offer for donations made in the next ten days: VIP tickets to OPENING THE BOX! A $200 donation will get you front-row seats at a performance in the city of your choice, $75 will get you general seats and for a $150 donation you can get 3 general seat tickets! As a VIP ticket-holder you will be able to skip the line and join the cast for a glass of wine or juice after the show. These tickets will be valid in any city we go to and any dates we offer…but for now we can guarantee performances in San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York and Washington D.C. or your money back.

This play is not only going to focus on the horrors inside our prisons, part of my motivation is to also bring out stories of incredible resilience—to show the infinitely creative ways people find to fill the endless days, months and years; how they stay in touch with the outside world and continue to resist the effects of these inhumane conditions. Right now, I have as many questions as I do answers—that’s why I can’t wait to begin. If you plan on making a donation and want to make sure you’ll able to attend, consider helping us organize a performance and we’ll come to you! You can also give away your ticket as a gift (we have no firm dates yet but estimate the debut will be at least a year away). Please note: pre-sale, VIP tickets are only being offered as an incentive for donations of $200, $75 or $150 made between Friday, July 26th and Monday, August 5th, 2013 only.

There are alternatives to the widespread use of torture in our prisons. Let’s force officials to stop relying on isolation as a system of control and instead funnel our tax dollars into programs that promote rehabilitation—like violence-prevention and conflict resolution—to create opportunities for prisoners to demonstrate responsibility and develop skills that will help them on the outside. Many other countries have already taken the lead on ending this cruel practice. It’s in our interest—and in the interest of a safer society—for us to do the same in the U.S. Help us bring this issue to many, many more people. Support OPENING THE BOX!!!

Thank You, Sarah Shourd and Team

Dear Supporters, This week…
Dear Supporters,

This week we reached 35% of our goal for Opening the Box. I can't tell you how exciting this is for those of us that have been working hard to get this project off the ground and get this message out. We have 17 days to make the other 65% and there's one, concrete way you can help. Send a personal email to your friends, family and colleagues today telling them you donated and why. Then, post on FB and twitter. I've written a sample email below that you can use and/or personalize. This simple act really can make a difference. Please help us get to 40% by Monday!

Yours, Sarah Shourd and Team

"I donated to this important project, Opening the Box, because I believe that more people need to know about the use of widespread torture in U.S. prisons in the form of prolonged solitary confinement. The UN has said criticized this draconian practice and it's high time we ended it. Please join solitary survivor Sarah Shourd and Solitary Watch in bringing real stories of victims of torture to thousands of Americans. Watch the video: http://www.crowdrise.com/endsolitaryconfinement."

CROWDRISING SINCE: Jun 24, 2013
Stuff About Me:

Amy Fettig serves as Senior Staff Counsel for the ACLU’s National Prison Project (NPP) where she litigates federal class action prison conditions cases under the Eighth Amendment.  Her practice focuses on claims regarding medical and mental health care in prison, solitary confinement, prison rape, and comprehensive reform in juvenile facilities. She also directs the ACLU’s Stop Solitary campaign seeking to end the practice of long-term isolation in our nation’s prisons, jails and juvenile detention centers through public policy reform, legislation, litigation and public education.

I am so excited to support Solitary Watch and Sarah Shourd in this important new effort to shine a light on the lives and voices of men, women and children held in solitary confinement around the country.  Solitary confinement in our prisons, jails, juvenile and immigration detention centers raises serious human rights concerns that must be immediately addressed nationwide.  "Opening the Box" will help the American people understand the human rights violations taking place in their own communtiies.  And through understanding comes action and the opportunity to change.  Please join me in supporting this critical piece in the national effort to stop solitary.
