Dear Donors,

Thank you for helping me reach my fundraising goal and then some! The climb was an inspirational experience to say the least and perhaps best described by one of our amazing guides, Cody, "It has been a few days since our expedition on Mt. Adams but after having some time to reflect I keep coming back to the importance of togetherness and having hope for reconciling our earthly community. In a period of society that allows us to entertain the idea that we can function separately both materially and spiritually, many of us I think, are feeling like we are fraying away from each other and without commonalities of purpose. I was glad to get out of the rat race and have the excuse to do some honest work with a group of people that would have been meaningless, indeed never would have come together, without the common struggle we shared. Their group was able to raise almost $45,000 for breast cancer and MS research.
In popular culture, mountain climbing is often a great example of the cult of individualism, which is why I was so grateful that this expedition put that conception to bed. Up at 11,000 feet we would have been lost without Travis' work on the sled, though he was down in the valley somewhere being a father; And while we were able to pull Jen a considerable ways up the mountain, we couldn't have made it to the South Summit without the help of members of the second party. Furthermore, none of us would have been up there sharing the unforgettable experience had it not been for Jennifer Evans Buerger and Andrew Buerger's motivation and cause.
I think this is analogous to the macro-level problems that we are beginning to understand as a globalized people, that instead of pulling our individual strings from the cloth to succeed, we must be brave and open to find how our string may strengthen the tapestry; how we might tie together our frayed ends in common struggle, and work to realize something much greater than a temporary body alone on a cold cosmic mountain. Truly, we are here together, and I am grateful for the company."
