Amy's Diagnosis and Treatment
Organized by: Amy Lopez
"My friend Amy has had excruciating chest pains for months. Her nearest hospital misdiagnosed her with Tietze syndrome, and gave her medicine which only made it worse. Now, she's on steroids to keep her alive, and even that won't last any more than a month. Please, we need your help. Desperately."
I'm Amy and I'm 19 years old. I suffer from unexplainable chest pains and shortness of breath. My pain didn't start til January. It was just brief pains in the chest. I'd tremble and have chest pains but I could control it. It wasn't too painful. But I never really paid attention to it. I always thought it was my PTSD. I thought it was my panic attacks whenever I'd get triggered over my past. It wasn't til the end of may that the pain got worse. I was sleeping when a huge chest pain awoke me. I was short on breath. I couldn't stop trembling. I felt as if someone were squeezing my heart and lungs as tightly as possible. A pain that kept me up all night. Then suddenly, I stopped breathing. My mother was awake and happened to step into my room. She saw that I wasn't breathing. I was rushed to the ER that instant. I had an oxygen tank hooked up. They ran Tests on me and diagnosed me with Tietze syndrome. I was prescribed pills for inflammation in the rib cage. I was on the pills for a long time. But the pain only kept getting worse. My condition kept getting crucial. I would be bedridden for days, if not weeks. I always refused to go to the hospital. I have no medical insurance so I had to pay everything out of my pocket. I can't work either, I can't work. I'm not allowed to work in my condition. Two months later, I was sent to a hope clinic out of town. They took a look at my previous diagnosis. They took me to the lab and ran tests on me. Tietze syndrome healed in a few days, even weeks. Two months had already passed and I only kept getting worse. My doctor told me I was misdiagnosed. That's when they started to run blood tests on me, pulmonary tests and a liver test. Everything seemed just fine. Everything was normal. They gave me steriods to ease my pain. The steroids really really work. It eases my pain for a while but it always comes back stronger. The steriods cost 30$. I can't afford to keep receiving that treatment. Not long ago, I had coughed up blood. I didn't go to the ER. I can't afford another trip to the hospital. The pain comes at random times. I could be sitting, sleeping, enjoying my day. I never know when it's coming, it's only the moment when I start to run low on breath and when my chest pain starts. It's a pain that will last up for days.
I'm asking for your help. Please, I can't afford money for a good hospital that will get me the right treatment. My condition gets worse as the days go by. If not treated, I'm sure it could lead to death. Please, I'm asking for your donation.
