As a park-poor, working class community in Southern California, the City of El Monte suffers from some of the highest childhood obesity rates in LA County. El Monte only has 0.4 acres of open space/ 1000 residents, a dismal amount compared to the national average of 6 acres/ 1000 residents. Our children NEED open space and parks to play in and to nurture their imaginations.
With your donation, you can help fund a field trip to take 40 4th graders from Cortada Elementary School to Eaton Canyon Park, at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains.
There, volunteer docents will lead small-group hikes. Students will learn about native plants, environmental justice and more. It will be the first time for many of them to visit the San Gabriel Mountains, which was declared a National Monument by President Obama in 2014.
Please donate today so our El Monte kids can experience nature in their own backyard, the San Gabriel Mountains. Thank you!!!
