My personal experience and struggles with depression have led to a passion in me for encouraging awareness and understanding of this very real and very harmful disease. It was at the tail end of a particularly difficult time for me that my mom and sisters included me on a walk, and I was inspired with the idea for the Bubble Walk. My mom stopped at a toy store as we walked and bought us all bubble wands; as we walked and blew bubbles along the side of the road, I was struck by how much my mood and outlook was improved by the activity. And not only were the bubbles making me happier, but they seemed to bring a smile and a honk from many of the drivers passing us on the road as well! The day was overcast and a little chilly, but walking along the road blowing bubbles with my family brought sunshine into the lives of everyone who witnessed it. That experience, coupled with my belief that it is important for people to be aware and understanding of the issues that surround depression and suicide, was what prompted me to create the Bubble Walk. Depression affects one in every ten Americans at some point in their lives, and approximately 80% of people meeting the criteria for clinical depression are not receiving any specific treatment for it. According to American Association of Suicidology, more than 90% of people who die by suicide have depression or another diagnosable, treatable mental or substance abuse disorder, and Alaska in particular has the highest suicide rate per capita in the entire US. My hope is that having the Bubble Walk in Anchorage will increase our awareness and understanding of these issues in our community, and bring hope and a sense of support to those who are struggling with depression and related issues. The Bubble Walk is currently sponsored by Ride for Life, AK, and your donations will greatly aid in allowing us to organize and run the event. Any funds raised through the Bubble Walk will be donated to Anchorage Community Mental Health Services to be used in their community depression groups and programs.
