The Eastern Illinois Foodbank and services like it are near and dear to my heart.
Our Story: I used to think my mom was super cool because she often made pancakes for dinner, and I loved pancakes! I was much older before I realized that my mom WAS cool, but the pancake dinners had more to do with us not having much $ for food! Food stamps were a fact of life for us but as a child I didn’t care as long as the pancakes kept coming : )
Even though we were living hand to mouth my mom was determined to be the first person in her family to attend college and give us a better future. She not only accomplished that, but went on to obtain a masters degree and PHD from the U of Illinois. Not bad for a coal miners daughter who worked 3rd shift and raised two crazy kids!
The basic nutrition that I received as a child allowed me to grow up strong in mind and body. I was blessed to have that translate into an opportunity to attend college and even play professional baseball. None of that would have happened without a little help!
Knowing that the Foodbank is providing meals to those in need motivates me to help in any way I can. So, in memory of my late mother I’m encouraging all my friends and family to skip a nice dinner out, make a big stack of pancakes and donate the difference to the Foodbank! That one act can provide 100’s of meals for those in REAL need… and you might be surprised how much you, your friends and your kids can enjoy a pancake dinner! If everyone I send this to does that I will most certainly be Prom King!
Big thanks to Stephanie Pratt for nominating me and allowing me to give just a little bit back and help some little boys and girls the way I was helped as a child. Please help me live up to the standard set by her last year!
