Andrew was a gifted athlete and loved playing sports, especially basketball, baseball, football and track, starting at a young age. Throughout his sporting career, he received numerous awards, including being named First Dayton Baseball League All-Star and MVP of the football team. He also competed in local, state and national tournaments and championship games.
Following his passion for sports, Andrew graduated from the University of Akron on a full athletic scholarship and pledged Iota Phi Theta Fraternity. He also joined the Washington D.C. Metro Nemesis in 2008, where he played as a wide receiver and tight end. His dream of making an impact in this arena and working towards playing in the NFL was starting to fall into place.
On October 15, 2009, Andrew was involved in a devastating car accident. He fought hard to recover from his severe injuries, stating “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”. On November 1, 2009, Andrew passed away.
Andrew considered his daughter, Aidyn Amoura, born December 31, 2007, his greatest accomplishment. He was a caring and dedicated father and his memory and legacy live on through her.
The Andrew Higgins Memorial Fund will directly benefit Andrew’s “Beautiful Love”, as Aidyn’s name means. Multiple college stipends will also be distributed to local high school students.
