It felt like prison. But we didn't commit a crime. Isolated. Alarms ringing. Food arriving by tray. Unable to leave - not just the hospital but the isolation wing and room. We had neighbors for months. We never saw them.
We did have a window with daylight. We had an iPad. And we had each other. 24 hours a day. For over 90 days.
And we were the lucky ones - who could afford an iPad, who could leave work to entertain our child, and who were eventually discharged.
Andrew is a kid. Not a prisoner. Yet for the billions of dollars raised to treat the diseases that imprison kids in the hospital, very little is raised to support the kids once they're there. Until now.
In support of Andrew and kids like him, and in collaboration with our team from Lucile Packard Children’s hospital, we are founding a music therapy program to bring the healing power of music to the thousands of hospital-bound children. If successful, we will expand beyond music to other aspects of 'hospital life'.
The inspiration came on the most important day in the hospital - transplant day. “Happy” blasted from the iPad, filling the room and our spirits. Many doctors held back tears as Andrew demanded “again!”. Watch it here: http://on.fb.me/1NCiL8r
That is the sound and image we cherish – of the boy who danced through his 90-plus days in the hospital . . . another 100 in isolation . . . and the months afterward. He enjoyed music until his last days.
And that's what every kid deserves. Not just music from an iPad, but instruments, instructors, performances, and the chance to forget where they are for a few moments every day.
You’ve supported us throughout. Your generous gift will help us support thousands more. Esther will personally lead the program development. And as always, we will share progress via Andrew’s Facebook group.
UPDATE: We are matching each donation dollar-for-dollar up to our goal.
