One Week to Go!
October 30, 2016
BENEFITING: GREEK ARCHDIOCESE INSTITUTE OF ST BASIL
EVENT DATE: Nov 07, 2016
This November, I'm running my first marathon! I can think of no better way to keep me motivated from now until I cross the finish line on November 6th than to use this opportunity to help support an institution that means so much to me and has done so much good for so many young children: Saint Basil Academy.
Saint Basil Academy is a home for children who are orphaned, from broken homes, or from destitute parents, of primarily (though not exclusively) the Orthodox Christian faith. It is located in Garrison, NY, and sits on a high bluff overlooking the Hudson River and West Point. The mission of the Academy is simple: to provide shelter, protection, love, and education to these children so they grow up to be well-rounded and productive members of society.
The Academy holds a very special place in my heart. As a young Cub Scout and later, Boy Scout, I spent many nights camping on the Academy grounds, exploring the campus, and making friends with the children who lived there. For my Eagle Scout project, I decided to embark on a 10-month long project to reorganize and modernize the library located on the grounds. As I was growing up, my father served for 10 years as President of the Academy, and I can recall making the trip from Brooklyn to Garrison countless of times to pay a visit to the campus.
But most importantly, throughout my entire life, I've witnessed the incredibly special care that Saint Basil Academy gives to the children entrusted to its protection. It really and truly is God's work.
(Fun fact: former United States Senator Olympia Snowe was a resident of the Academy from the age of 8 through 14.)
Help me reach my personal fundraising goal of $2500 to help support Saint Basil Academy and help make a difference in the lives of children who needs a loving and nurturing home.
