Hey all, an update from Esther, as translated through her friend/nurse:

"hello doctor. this is Esther l would like to take this opportunity to wish you merry Christmas and happy new year
l hope you are doing well as for me am also fine. l think l told you that l and my donor have finished doing test and medical exams in king Faisal as l was waiting the international service called me and told me that they have finished with the hospital in India where l will be operated so the only thing that remains is the ministry of health to approve it but as we are entering festival season l will have to wait in January l hope that is a very good news for you as it for me
thank you"

I suspect we will hear something within a few weeks but you never know, as the Minister of Health, herself, usually has to approve everything like this.

Just a formality; I'll keep you posted.

My sincere gratitude and a happy holidays to you all!

Hi all,

This has been a long time coming; my apologies for the delay.

You. Have. Done it.

I've been trying to get more specific logistical info to send to you all so you can see the gears turning but they turn slow in Rwanda. I can tell you that Esther, and her family, are enormously thankful and continue to do all the things they need to to do make this happen.

I cannot thank you enough or tell you what it means to me, friends and strangers, that you came through and helped us make this a reality.

I promise I'll update you all on progress as I get movement on the other side of the pond.

Love, always,

Thank you! And, Big News!

I'm sitting here on a Friday morning off, looking through all these donations from you all, and feeling deeply grateful and touched. Many of you I have not reached out to in years. Some of you are family members I am terrible at keeping in touch with. Others, including some really generous donors, I don't know at all. This, for me, has been a life affirming process. It proves we can actually care for someone we don't know and will never happen upon in our daily lives. With whom, it seems at first, we have nothing in common.

Except that, now as I feel my first child coming in January -- as I do things like look at life insurance policies so this being can go to school and eat well and not be afraid of losing their home -- I do not feel so separate from her. When I initially told Esther that she was going to die, that we couldn’t do anything for her but make her comfortable, she took this with characteristic Rwandan poise and acceptance. Then she thought of her daughter April and at that moment I saw in her eyes that it just could not be, should not be possible that she would have to leave this 2 year old alone in the world. She started saying, over and over, “But I just like her so much. I just like her so much.” This was not about her; it was always about April.

We are all the same, deep down. And, it cannot be possible that we just let her go.

Which brings me to...

The Big News!

ESTHER’S MOTHER IS A MATCHING DONOR and will be accompanying her to India WHEN we are able to finish this thing.

We are also getting close! So far we have raised $10,235 with less than $4,000 to go to kidney time.

And so, thank you, thank you, for your help. With this message, I am not asking for more financial support from you all; you have done enough. I am asking you to celebrate, and to share this crowdrise with your friends! Send it in an email! A post! Tweet! Whatever!

Let's make this happen.

In eternal gratitude,

Andy Seaman, MD
