Jemma, who I am extremely lucky to now call my cousin, has been battling this wrenching disease for almost 12 years. Jemma is unable to eat, dress, or move without the help of her incredible husband, Jason. Throughout her courageous battle Jemma remains a giver, a fighter and the bravest person we know.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Eventually, people with ALS lose the ability to initiate and control muscle movement which ultimately leads to death. While there is not a cure or treatment today that halts or reverses ALS, there are several drugs in clinical trials that hold promise. Visit als-ny.org to read about some major projects the ALS Association is currently researching.
