When Andrew Torres of La Cañada received a Congressional appointment to the United States Naval Academy to join the Class of 2002, little did he anticipate a diagnosis of cancer in January of that year.
For the remainder of his life, he served as an assistant to the Senior Marine at the Naval Academy. In the hours before his death in 2004, Andrew asked his family and friends to help find a cure for cancer. In his honor, they have organized six fundraisers, including five golf tournaments. He was posthumously awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal for his courage and contribution to cancer research.
To date we have already raised $270,000 for cancer research at HMRI. Past research was directed toward finding a simple blood test to predict liver cancer, with results published in 2010 in a peer-reviewed article by J.N. Riggins, W. Corey, A.N. Fonteh and M.G. Harrington, in Disease Markers.
