I’ve been running for myself for a long time – high school, college, grad school, race after race after race for the way it made me feel - but until recently never even considered running a marathon. My first marathon was the 2011 San Francisco Marathon, which was fun but really tough. So after taking a little time off, I buckled down and started training for my second marathon, the California International Marathon in Sacramento. This one went really well, and I got a lot out of it. Now that I have a couple under my belt, I have decided to run my next one, the 2012 San Francisco marathon, for something other than me.
I recently found out that my cousin and his wife are expecting their first baby. We are all through the roof with excitement, as it will be the first child born to our generation of the family. We also know that their baby will be born with Down syndrome. We’re still excited, we certainly won’t love it any less, and of course we want it to have every opportunity in the world to do and be whatever it wants (I know the ‘it’ sounds weird, but they want the gender to be a surprise). So, with that in mind, I am running the 2012 SF Marathon in support of one of their partner charities, Research Down Syndrome. They are a non-profit that supports Down syndrome cognitive research towards developing biomedical therapies to treat the cognitive impairment of people of all ages with Down syndrome.
My hope is that by helping to raise some money in support of this great cause, my cousin’s baby will have a chance to take advantage of these new therapies. Please help me use my running to give something back to the community by supporting RDS.
Thanks for helping to support this great cause.
