I work for the Daraja Academy, an amazing school that provides a quality education to impoverished but talented Kenyan girls. We are official partners this year with Bay to Breakers and we are trying to raise money and awareness for this great school!
What is Daraja?
Daraja Academy is a boarding secondary school for Kenyan girls with top academic scores and exceptional leadership skills but no means to continue their education. The academy provides shelter, food, healthcare and counseling services. Daraja Academy changes girls' lives, but Daraja also changes the lives of the volunteers, employees and board members! Daraja has changed my life for the better!!
Background: Rebecca is quite a distance from Daraja campus, but she is a committed student and it’s all worth it! “It takes 8 hours to get home,”Rebecca said. A member of the Turkana tribe, Rebecca has made becoming a good role model to her 6 brothers and sisters a priority during her time at Daraja. She is determined to make a positive difference in the lives of others. After Rebecca’s father was murdered, her mother tried her best to raise the children, but often, the kids went hungry, and could notafford tuition anywhere, yet Rebecca performed in school and was fortunately accepted to Daraja!
Today at Daraja Academy: Rebecca can’t choose between math and science as her favorite subject, because she loves them both. She wants to help uplift her family and community, and is focused on finishing her education so she can do just that. “As a doctor, I can help people who would not have been able to get help otherwise,” Rebecca said. A member of the Art Club at Daraja, Rebecca is learning new ways to express herself.
