THE STORY:

Hello! I'm Denean Richards and I'm raising money for 10 year old Shanyah in Roatan, Honduras so she can go to school.
My involvement with Roatan began several years ago when we stopped there on a cruise. As I walked into downtown Roatan from the ship, we were greeted by two young boys who wanted to be our tour guides while we were in town, hoping that we’d give them a nice tip at the end of the day. One of the boys was about 10, the other, about 6. They were both adorable and very sweet. I could tell the older one had been to school. He was well spoken, very polite and knew everything about the history of Roatan. The younger boy was more quiet and shy.
Roatan is a very poor island off the coast of Honduras. There was a paved main road into town but the sidewalks were dirt. There was broken glass, dog feces and garbage on the sidewalks and in the streets. This concerned me as the younger boy didn't have shoes. I asked him about this and he said his family couldn't afford shoes for him. The irony in this is that all along the downtown where we walked, there were shoe shops, offering shoes for just a few dollars a pair. Long story short, I bought him a pair of shoes. I couldn't believe his reaction. He seemed to stand up a foot taller, smiled from ear to ear and asked if we could go and show his mom. As we all walked together to see his mom, a string of boys started following us. First 2, then 5, then 8. All of them were commenting about the new shoes, yelling to other kids about them and pointing them out. Apparently new shoes were a BIG deal!
Shortly thereafter I tipped the boys and got back on the ship having enjoyed the afternoon with them but I couldn’t stop thinking about what a big deal the other kids made about the shoes. I had such a strong feeling about it that when I came back home from vacation, I reached out to some people in the states who work with children and schools in Roatan. I had a conversation with one woman who runs a charitable organization for kids there and she said, Denean, you didn’t just buy him a pair of shoes, you gave him an education. Apparently, in Roatan, if a child doesn’t have shoes, they can’t attend school. His friends were so excited for him because he could now be educated. How incredible is it that a $3 pair of shoes could possibly change a child’s life? Wow!
This fundraising page is about my new involvement in Roatan. One of the people I had reached out to years ago when I was learning about the island after my trip there, contacted me. She is looking for a sponsor for a 10 year old girl to continue attending her school. I thought, no problem, how much could it be? Well, it’s more than I can afford unfortunately. It is the most prestigious, bilingual school on the island and affords her the best chance of success in life. She has excellent grades, is a model student and wants to be a doctor when she grows up. Her favorite sport is basketball and her favorite subject is science. How fitting for a future doctor!
Shanaya’s previous sponsor became ill and can no longer help her. Her father has passed away from HIV and her mother has HIV. She has no other family to rely on. With all of these challenges at the young age of ten, she wears a beautiful smile as you can see. $3,157.00 is the total amount needed for 1 year of school. I will be raising money annually for her so at least she doesn’t have to worry about her education. Children in Roatan don’t have much of a chance at a better life if they aren’t well educated.
Please give what you can to Shanaya. Any amount will help but of course the bigger the better. I will post updates on her from time to let you know how she’s doing.
Thank you!
