BENEFITING: FRIENDS OF CHINA
I came to China in 2014 armed with two or three Chinese phrases, a passion for souls, and fluency in my mother tongue—English. In a city of 25 million, the opportunities to meet new people are inexhaustible: riding the metro with 8 million daily riders, crammed into a single subway car shoulder-to-shoulder with fifty other people; biking the streets weaving in and out of 1 billion scooters; living in a 20-story apartment building (one of thirty or so in a city block). Shanghai can feel like a city of statistics. But each ONE of the 25 million is precious.
I currently teach in a kindergarten classroom, co-lead a women’s ministry, and make the simple but essential effort to connect—however briefly—with everyone I see, from neighbors to taxi drivers to the man who cuts my hair. Every interaction is a chance to minister and witness, another opportunity to put love on display.
开心 (kāi xīn) are the Chinese characters for “happy.” Literally translated it means “open heart.” My goal and purpose is to open my heart to these people.
Friends of China provides support for each teacher, including air fare, insurance, and any personal financial need. Please consider supporting this mission to reach the lost.
