Hello! My name is Angela Kulzer and my life changed on November 17, 2011. I was about 32 weeks pregnant with my second child ( I also had an amazing step-daughter that I gained when I met my husband) as well as a 3 year old son. My pregnancy was good up until that day. I woke up early as my husband had to go out of town for a one day business trip and one that he couldn't miss. I woke up with some chest pain and short of breath The short of breath was eased a little if I sat down but it didn't go away. I called my Dr around 6:30 AM and explained my symptoms. They suggested I go to the hospital to get checked out, they didn't say what could be wrong. My husband really wanted to stay home but he really couldn't and I insisted that I would be fine. He left and I promised I would go to the Dr after I dropped my son off at daycare. After I dropped my son off, I came up to the intersection where I would either turn to go home or straight to go to the hospital. I turned right to go home. The breathing was a lot easier and the chest pain was better too. I thought maybe it was just "normal" pregnancy problems that they tell you are normal. After thinking about how upset my husband would be, I turned around and went to the hospital.
As soon as I explained my symptos upon checking in they immediately took me back to a room in the ER. They took a lot of blood, hooked me up to all of the machines and ran every test they could. They all came back showing that I was fine. However my heart rate was pretty elevated. I was calling my husband crying telling him they thought I had a blood clot but they couldn't confirm it. I remember the Dr talking to a nurse in the hallway outside of my room, he told her that he was ordering a Cat Scan. She said we can't do that, she's pregnant and he said he needed to find out if I had Pulmonary Embolisms (PE) or blood clots in my lungs. I had to consent and was petrified that it could hurt my baby girl but also scared that if I did have clots, they could kill me. Chad rushed to the hospital and sat down right as the Dr came in with the news that I had multiple blood clots in both of my lungs. He hadn't even finished talking and they were already hooking up the IV with drugs for the clots. I was admitted to the hospital. The next day, November 18th was my 5th wedding anniversary, one that I won't ever forget. For the remainder of my pregnancy and for 3 months after, I had to give myself Lovenox shots. For an additional 6 months, I was on Coumadin.
I am signing up for this race for two reasons. One is to raise awareness for both people possibly affected by blood clots and for awareness to Physicians. Very thankful that my Dr didn't take my symptoms lightly and pursued all avenues until he found the clots. The second is to take control of my health again as I felt like I was given a second chance back in 2011 and I want to improve my health to enjoy the time I have on this earth! Thanks for any support you can give!
