In just 6 weeks I will be running the NY Marathon to support my friend and her important charity, TEAM ANDI.
TEAM ANDI was named after my dear friend's daughter who was born 10 weeks premature and weighed just 2 lbs. Andi lived in the NICU unit of Mount Sinai Hospitals of New York City for 3 months.
“I gave birth to Andi, Mount Sinai gave her life.” (Amy)
Andi was safe and cared for every day by the nurses and doctors of the hospital. Unfortunately, due to the absence of any family rooms, Amy and her husband were not able to stay continuously or experience any privacy with their newborn. Andi lived in a crowded NICU unit with lights on her 24/7 and was only held by doctors and nurses. They examined her, swaddled and bathed her, taught her how to suck, changed her, and fed her. Amy and her husband missed out on all of Andi’s firsts and when she came home 9 weeks later, it was the first time they were able to bond and get to know each other.
“I missed all the firsts; I hadn't even heard her make a sound. When I finally brought her home I was so afraid of her, I had no idea if her cry meant she was tired, hungry, cold, or sick. I didn't know her, she didn't know me and she was an infant, no longer a newborn. Those first few minutes are so important and we missed the first few months.” (Amy)
Amy took her love for running and formed TEAM ANDI, a charity focused on building private rooms within the NICU unit. The rooms will provide a place for the family to bond and nurture their at-risk newborn. Each room costs $250,000, it will be equipped with the necessary incubator, machines, a queen bed and full bathroom so the families can live with their babies. In just two short years since the founding of TEAM ANDI, it has raised enough support to build one room and is already off and running toward the second.
TEAM ANDI was formed in 2012 but due to Hurricane Sandy the first TEAM ANDI marathon was in 2013. On November 1st, this will be the 3rd marathon for the TEAM. Please help me support TEAM ANDI and give families of at-risk newborns a chance to have as much a normal beginning to this very special time in life. At mile 23 we will run by Mount Sinai Hospital and can wave to the current families visiting their current at-risk newborns and think, ‘I only have to fight through the next 3.2 miles of this race, these babies are fighting to live’.
