THE STORY:

I have a dream and a desire.  A realization came to me over the past couple of years after working at a local non-porfit Humane Society. The organization makes their own State level revenue along with those donations received from private individuals, yet even after all the funding they manage to receive, thousands of Dogs get killed each year by these places. Let me explain in depth for a moment, most of these shelter can legally tell the public they are a NO KILL shelter. Most people go ok,wow!!, thats great and continue to write their funding checks, without thinking how or what the money does, and often times more than not, DOES NOT get spent on.

What most people fail to realize, is that these places can have a 10% kill rate and be allowed to call themselves no kill, all a ploy and a tactic to allow them to not lose funding, at surface value many people may agree with this concept, they may say well you can't save them all. I would like to disagree with this. After working there for several years, I saw puppies 12 and 15 at a time put down with their mothers, cats caught by people in neighborhoods in traps simply because they were a nuisance, automatically deemed as feral simply because of the trap. After working in the intake area of the shelter for a year where they are brought in surrendered by owners, or simply found walking around by strangers. Ive seen thousands killed, perfectly healthy, or some with behavioral issues only, that require loving time and attention.

The shelter had more along the lines of a 30% kill rate and that's shooting on the low end, they turned down funding from an organization called Target Zero about a year ago. The reason for this, I feel and truly believe many of these nonprofits are keeping most of the funds for their board members and directors of the shelters, they fudge the numbers to appear that they stay within the guidelines of regulation, spending very little donation money on things of worth, getting around 85% of all dog food donated in large quantities for free.

I adopted a Dog that had been found, the owner did not want her back, she is a German Pointer mix, had a microchip and had originally came from the shelter, after months of being there, not put up for anyone to adopt but kept hidden in the back they were going to kill her. Simply because she did not get along very well with smaller dogs, or cats. This to me is Trivial, because I have owned her 2 years now, she is around 4 years old, the absolute most amazing dog with humans. My issue is many of these animals are not rehabilitated properly, in the sense these shelters do not have bigger facilities or use their money in a way to hire more people or train more of the current ones they already have, to accommodate a larger number of animals at one time. When you have room for only 200 at a time, you get full and simply kill based off of space alone, yet they receive enough funding to buy all new fleet vehicles for their Animal Control Division instead of utilizing a used option, the director makes 5 and a half times more than the standard employees and around 3 times as much of anyone under him 98,000 a year is a whole lot of money to pay someone for a labor of love. Thats one big indicator to me something is not right. 125,000 dollars for new fleet vehicles and accessories for them is also a lot in regards to what that money could be doing for the animals.

I could go on for days about the ins and outs, ups and downs. My Goal simply, is to ask people who are involved, who love animals as much as I do to Donate anything you can spare, I can use these funds to start the first step of my journey in becoming an advocate to Lobby against these practices, this funding is crucial because without it, it's very hard to go to the places, and to work with the right people in order to propose plans and gather a local following, a portion of these fund will be donated to local Dog rescue groups outside of the Government sector, allocated in generous but small enough portions in order to not only help their cause, but to propose and organize a local group of advocates against these primitive practices that are still allowed to take place. Some of the funding will be used on my end, the fundraiser organizer, for simple expenses such as gas, advertising and time to make a lot of these other efforts come into place, spreading awareness does come at a personal cost, and lastly I would love to be able to organize a website or a web group to facilitate these discussions. To attract animals lovers like me and you.

Also professionals with goals to help push this agenda, an agenda much like target zero, only mine wants to force Local shelters all over, starting with the one where I live to be more public with their spending, to be required to spend less on new items and seek used alternatives, in order to better spend and stretch the funds given by those who thought the money would be better allocated. God Bless and Thank you in advance for anything you are able to donate, I hope to generate enough of a buzz in the community to take my cause on the Local news here in Alabama where I live along with making the cause of accountabilty a national isssue.
