BENEFITING: Animals for Adoption
We're a model shelter with a mission - to save and find permanent homes for unwanted and abandoned dogs. We begin by teaching at-risk children to train the dogs, giving them the home-living skills that make them more adoptable. The kids and dogs both benefit from the indelible connection to each other.
Our work is tireless - transporting dogs from overrun southern shelters, providing medical care, training and nurturing, then finding them the loving homes they deserve. Dogs are sent to the Green Chimneys school for basic training and socialization - there, at-risk children learn boundaries, and gain self-esteem, mutual respect and empowerment through their connection with and impact upon a dog.
Last year, we transported Gavin from an overpopulated southern shelter - a young Pitbull mix, he was scared but clearly hungry to connect with people, though not sure how. Like many southern dogs, he suffered from heartworm - we paid for the costly treatment. On he went to Green Chimneys, where he slowly built confidence from the nurturing of the children and staff, and in return deeply affected them, opening their opportunity and inclination to connect, relate and love.
Sharon, who works at Green Chimneys, saw Gavin and instantly knew his gentle nature would appeal to her young daughter. She was right - it was instant love. On the ride home, while the child worried about caring for a new dog, Gavin instinctively cuddled up to her. She whispered, "It's okay, Gavin. Don't be scared. You have a home now." And, weeks later, she said, "Mommy, he doesn't seem to say much and gets scared sometimes. I'm like that, too. I think we understand each other."
Kindred spirits, finding each other. It's what we live for. Please help us to continue.
