Damian Miller wrote -More than 10,000 bears in China, and approximately 2,400 in Vietnam, are kept in horrendous caged conditions on farms, where their bile is painfully extracted. The bile is used not only in traditional medicine, but also in many ordinary household products.
Bile is extracted using various painful, invasive techniques, all of which causes massive infection in the bears. This cruel practice continues despite the availability of a large number of effective and affordable herbal and synthetic alternatives.
Most farmed bears are kept in tiny cages. In China, sometimes the cages are so small that the bears are unable to turn around and stand on all fours. Some bears are caged as cubs and never released. Bears may be kept caged like this for up to 30 years. Most farmed bears are starved, dehydrated and suffer from multiple diseases and malignant tumors that ultimately kill them.
Animals Asia (www.animalsasia.org) is devoted to ending the barbaric bear bile trade, housing rescued bears in two peaceful sanctuaries located in Chengdu, China and Tam Dao, Vietnam.
