BENEFITING: Saha Global
I have recently been accepted to participate in the 2016 Saha Global Leadership Program as a Water Field Representative. This summer, I will be traveling to Northern Ghana from June 1-22 for this program.
Saha Global is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that partners with rural communities in developing countries to establish sustainable social businesses that provide basic services, like water and electricity. 40% of the population in Ghana currently lacks access to clean drinking water. My particular project will focus on training the local women to treat the contaminated water they collect and start their own clean water business. I will be working in Northern Ghana with three other Field Representatives to set up a water business in a village currently lacking access to clean water. Once set up, this business will provide a permanent source of clean water for the entire community. These businesses are completely owned and operated by the women in the communities, and use simple, affordable technologies that can be found in the local shops and markets. All of the businesses' revenue stays in the community and is managed by the local women entrepreneurs.
Saha Global is very committed to the long-term success of the projects. Since 2008, Saha Global has launched 84 clean water businesses, which serve 43,220 people. 100% of these businesses are still in operation today!
Growing up in Egypt and Thailand, and having my parents currently living in Kazakhstan, I am very aware of the challenges rural communities in developing countries face. I am very excited to take part in this unique and important project in Ghana, and cannot wait to start!
Before I go, part of my responsibilities as a Field Representative includes raising the necessary funds for the materials, including large drums that will hold the water, storage containers, taps, chlorine tablets, and more. 100% of the funds I raise will go directly towards starting the clean water business my teammates and I will be establishing, and ensuring that it continues after we leave.
I would greatly appreciate your help in this endeavor - every donation makes a difference!
