How did I get here?
Well, Ironman for Anna hits a little closer to home for me than others. I don’t have a child with cancer, but I have a child with a chronic illness that spends a lot of time on the oncology floor at Sacred Heart. I see a lot of those families, and being an RN, I hear a lot of the conversations in passing and can’t help but overhear what some of these families are going through. My son Brighton was diagnosed with Crohns this summer, and requires infusions to keep him well. I am lucky, I get to take him home after these infusions, and he doesn’t have too many adverse effects from these. The other families I encounter aren’t so lucky. I see their pain when I pass them in the hall, I feel their worry, and if I am lucky, I get to catch a glimpse of one of their adorable kids smiles in the doorway (I swear, these kids are always beaming). Being in the healthcare profession, I know how fragile they are. I sit in a recliner chair while Brighton gets his infusions, and I think about what I can do to help these families.
I came across Ironman for Anna because of Dr. Tom DeTar. I remembered reading his story, and thought, “I want to do that someday”. Well, this is my time. I am beyond honored to be a part of this amazing foundation and to get to help so many families. These families are what will drive me during this race. I am racing for them, and in honor of Anna.
A friend told me not too long ago, during a pep talk while I was second-guessing this decision “you’ve done the bike, you’ve done the run, and you CAN do the swim”. The swim is always what has held me back from competing. I have volunteered in the medical tent as an RN and a captain for too many Ironman races to count. It will be a different experience for me this year, and I can’t wait.
So thank you to everyone who has and will help me along my journey with Ironman for Anna.
