It started with Annie shring a Facebook meme post about putting aside old purses and filling them with basic human hygiene necessities for women. That was the week before Halloween 2015. From there it evolved into a goal to make about 20-30 purses with about $10-15 worth of products to hand out on Thanksgiving (and round 2 on Christmas). She, her daughter and a some friends put a call out to all they knew and several donations came in. In a matter of 4 weeks a total of about $700 was spent from her own pocket and cash donations from family and friends . On the Saturday after Thanksgiving Anna, Daija, Jodi, & Gabriella traveled to Downtown Los Angeles and handed out about 30-40 bags to homeless men and women. They then went to a park in Pasadena and handed out approximately 20 more bags. Each bag/purse contained 3 kits with a total of about $30 worth of supplies. One kit had a few snacks and water. Another kit had socks, gloves, scarf, hat, and rain poncho, a deck of playing cards, and a pen, paper, and 1 stamped envelope. The third kit was filled with many kinds of hygiene products such as toothpaste and toothbrush, mouth wash, shampoo, hand sanitizer, female sanitary products, shaving razors, lotion, wash cloth, soap, and so on. The experience of giving love and necessities and hugs and gratitude was so inspiring that Annie said she wanted to do this again and again and again. It had already been decided that there will be another of these at Christmas time. We are also looking into forming a small Non-Profit company that can accept donations and prepare these kits and provide them to those in need throughout the year. The funds we raise through this campaign will be approximately $1000 toward the government and legal costs of forming the Non-profit company. ALL OTHER DONATIONS WILL GO DIRECTLY to kits to hand out to local homeless folks. Thank you everyone for your help making this happen!
