when i was a little girl, my mother used to tell my sisters and me a story that you’ve probably heard. There’s a little boy walking on a beach after a huge storm and the high tide has swept all these starfish up onto the sand. all around him thousands of starfish are stranded and the little boy walks up and down the beach picking up one starfish at a time and chucking it back into the sea. a man walks up to him and says, "why are you doing that? look around you. there are too many and it will not matter." and the little boy picks up a starfish and tosses it into the water and says, "it mattered to him."
Well i've grown up with that story and it’s done a couple things for me. thing 1: it's made me want to strive to be the kind of person who stands in the sand chucking the proverbial starfish into the sea. thing 2: it also means i want to be on that beach surrounded by all kinds of other like-minded, echinoderm throwing people. thanks mom.
so come stand on the beach with me! let's throw starfish together. figuratively...
education. food and housing. environmental protection. and the elderly. these are areas where my heart is.
so hello there! let's repair the world together.
