Here is A Family Member's Journey to Recovery
Six years ago I was not well. My only child, a bright, beautiful 16 year old was acting strangely. Overnight she was transformed from a caring, civic minded honor student bound for a college scholarship to an angry, out of control adolescent, a high school drop out and a runaway in a few months. Tragic crisis in the next 2 years threw me in a downward spiral that led to my own clinical depression. I was overwhelmed by a fragmented mental health system that I seemed unable to navigate.
Not until, by happenstance, I found out about NAMI and took the Family-to-Family course did I start on the path of true recovery that continues today. I learned about mental illness and that I was not alone and that taking care of myself was the first step toward helping my daughter. I was not at all sure what I could offer, but I volunteered to help in any way. I was a NAMI support group member and, with great trepidation, I agreed to train as a support group facilitator.
As I think about my journey of recovery, I marvel how NAMI has helped me learn so much about mental illness, to prepare me for and sustain me through crises, to help me process my anger and frustration into positive action, to grieve and accept, and challenge a system and society that so deplorably under-serves the mentally ill. Today I have a new relationship with my daughter, who is now employed and dealing positively with her illness. We both owe much to NAMI. -NAMI Family Member
