Anthony's Road to Recovery
Organized by: Keith Taylor
On August 26, 2016 God blessed the world with a precious gift, my son Anthony. He was born so innocent and yet so filled with life at 4:20 in the morning on that very Friday. My entire life came to a pause the second I laid eyes on him. He was so precious and so perfect in every way. At least that's how it appeared to everyone in the room gazing at him despite the fact that Anthony was born premature only weighing 4 pounds 10 ounces. He could literally fit in the palm of my hand as we sat there for a brief moment staring each other in the eyes for the first time. I knew at that moment, during that brief interaction, my son was born for a reason and that one day he would change the world. Amidst all of the excitement and commotion going on in the delivery room at that moment, his eyes told me that he was special and unique and would do something great one day. That feeling of bliss and pure joy for the many wonderful opportunities that were awaiting my son in life came to a halt in a matter of moments. With in the first 48 hours of his precious and innocent life my son Anthony was diagnosed with Hirschsprung's disease. My world was quickly taken on a rollercoaster ride of emotions from the highest of highs to the lowest of lows finding out this unfortunate news. Hirschsprung's disease is where the nerves in your intestines at birth are dead consequently not allowing you to pass any matter out of your body through your rectum. Not treated quickly, the disease could be devastating even fatal. Anthony experienced immediate and excessive vomiting as well as the swelling and distortion of his belly. He went from calm and peaceful to uncontrollable pain and agony with in a matter of hours. How could this be happening? How could this be the life predestined for our little bundle of joy so soon within his first few days of his beautiful life? He was quickly transferred to another hospital to their NICU department for immediate care from physicians where tests and lab works were quickly done to determine the seriousness of his condition. He experienced more procedures and examinations done to his tiny body in the first few days of his life than most people do in their entire lifetime involving needles and other painful instruments. After numerous rectal biopsies and lab tests and incisions done to his poor body, the severeness of his condition was determined and immediate surgery was orded. Because of the magnitude of the surgery and due to how small Anthony was, extreme caution had to be taken to ensure absolutely nothing went wrong. Anthony finally went into surgery where a team of 4 surgeons operated on his tiny helpless body extensively for more than 8 hours. Anthony survived the surgery by the grace and mercy of God and excellent hard work and care from the surgeons who operated on him. He is now recovering but is still battling with health conditions post surgery. Typically children with this disease are consequently more prone to infection because of the amount of colon and intestine removed from their bodies as well as weaker immune system due to the lack of white blood cells preventing the body from defending itself from other diseases and infections. Anthony is going to require constant visits to specialists for frequent post opp procedures to ensure his body is healing correctly and growing properly so no future surgeries or operations need to be preformed. His mother and I barely make over minimum wage and are struggling with the high medical bills and expences because we make too much to qualify for government assistance but not enough to cover his medical expenses and other special medical needs he is going to encounter throughout his journey in life. Not to mention we have a 6 year old daughter we are also raising as well who is frantically worrying about her little brother and if he's going to be ok or not. We have prayed and kept our faith and know God will provide a way but we just ask for any help we can get so we can make sure our son has a fair chance at a healthy and prosperous life. We appreciate every penny because it will really go a long way to help provide for this brave and courageous son we have brought into this world. We would like to thank you in advance for whatever God puts on your hearts to give. Thank you and God bless.
