BENEFITING: SAMARITANS OF NEW YORK INC
EVENT DATE: Sep 25, 2016
It's here . . . the 4th Annual 'BE A FRIEND' 5K Walkathon on Sunday, September 25 which supports Samaritans Suicide Prevention Center, whose mission is to help New Yorkers in distress and save lives… one at a time!
I am walking in memory of my amazing brother Michael who took his own life 16 years ago when he was just 25 years old. Mental illness is a sickness and we need to create an awareness about this and prevent suicide from happening. I could have chosen to be silent about how my brother died but I much rather be vocal and help save lives!
Samaritans operates NYC's only 24-hour suicide prevention hotline, support groups that provide solace to those who have been touched by suicide, and education programs that teach the public and health professionals how to help people in crisis.
Whenever a person in distress needs a place to turn, a shoulder to lean on, someone to talk to who will take them seriously and listen--Samaritans Is There! They were there for me after Mikey died. I went to suicide "survivor" groups which provided me with so much love and understanding from people who also lost a loved one to suicide. Those group therapy sessions saved MY life!
Suicide is still a taboo subject, though most of us know someone who struggles with mental illness, trauma, sexual abuse, bullying or some kind of tragedy. That stigma means very few people think to make charitable donations to Samaritans, which is able to operate on a shoestring thanks to the contributions of its caring volunteers.
Please support my efforts to help this unique community-based organization continue its all-important, life-saving work. Every donation is 100% tax-deductible. TRUST ME, your money is going to a VERY GOOD CAUSE!
