Trauma Healing work in Rwanda
Organized by: Melanie Chery
I truly believe that a positive cyclic energy evolves when people do good for & with each other. Why not ignite the positivity through giving! I have always sought to empower women and individuals who have been marginalized because like them we are all humans who deserve to be supported. With the Healing and Rebuilding Our Communities (HROC) trauma healing program, beginning July 15th, I will garner more insight to offer support.
As a Columbia University School of Social Work graduate, what I understand most at this time is empathy and compassion. My hope is to travel to Rwanda this July-August to take part in an Alternatives to Violence program to work with survivors and perpetrators of Genocide and other traumatic events. One might say, "Yes! go and help the survivors of violence", but what about those who have perpetrated violence? Exhibiting empathy and compassion is the ability to ask what happened, why and how can we get through this. As I have provided mental health trauma services in a New York City Jail, worked with individuals who have been labeled criminals, and survivors of Gender Based Violence I have learned that there is something behind everyones story and that at least we each need someone to share that with.
The training will provide in-depth hands on training that will be transferable to working with individuals and immigrant communities in the United States. Outside of the training program, while in Rwanda, I hope to facilitate workshops in the local Kigali community. These workshops will cover trauma, women and girl empowerment, gender based violence and the intersection of mental health.
YOU will be helping me achieve this personal, career and life changing goal by financially supporting!
