Ants in your Pants - Shpilkes- the boat!
Organized by: Mary Fitzgerald
I work as the Chair for the Olympia Yacht Clubs High School Sailing Team in Olympia WA. We are open to all the areas local High schools and are part of the North West Interscholastic Sailing Association. Both High school sailing and collegiate sailing is truly co- ed. Boys and girls compete with each other against each other. No need for title 9 here. We are raising money for new FJ boats for our team. We don't have any FJ boats and hence have to charter them at every regatta. We need to raise $30,000.00 to buy 3 new boats. As part of our fundraising efforts, we are having a big gala auction and are auctioning off the naming rights of a J24 sailboat that we purchased this year. We have already had one couple say they will spend $1000.00 to name the boat what they want. I don't remember the name, but it doesn't really fit the boat. I'm proposing raising $5000.00 to counter their offer and name the boat Shpilkes. Shpilkes is Yiddish for "ants in your pants" which I think is very appropriate for a very nimble 24 foot sailboat that will be sailed by a lot of teens. Now I'm not Jewish,(most likely a recovering Catholic) but when I heard a jewish friend use the term in regards to a co-worker that drinks too much coffee, I fell in love with it. So that is my pitch. Just envision a sailboat with the name Shpilkes on the stern and a few painted -on ants crawling out of the water- can you picture it? Shpilkes ! Yeah!
