THE STORY:

I know many of you have already learned of the recent tragedy involving one of our Russian Speaking Mom's Community members, and have asked how you can help.

Anya Veksler and her mother "baba Sima" were hit by a truck while crossing a road in Cherry Hill, NJ where they had recently moved.  The truck driver was reportedly texting and not paying attention. As a result Anya was critically injured and Sima did not survive the accident.

Anya spent four weeks in the hospital undergoing countless surgeries and has now been discharged to begin the long process of healing, both physically and emotionally.  Her husband, Dima, is now working from home as Anya is not recovered enough to manage the household or their twin sons.

Needless to say the family is in need of help with the pressure of mounting medical bills and the absence of Anya's salary.

"Baba Sima" was a beloved mother and grandmother as well as caregiver for the whole family and a woman who often babysat for families in the community who needed a helping hand.  To honor Sima and to help the family we are trying to raise money and show our community cares for them. You can donate through this web-site - see the orange button Donate on the right side of the screeen.

Mom, Daughter Struck by Pickup Truck, 1 Dies

A crash in South Jersey possible caused by distracted driving left a mother dead and her adult daughter fighting for life.

A 1990 Ford Ranger pickup truck struck Serafina Fel and her daughter Anna Veksler as they walked across Evesham Road near Kresson Road in Voorhees Township, N.J. around 8:20 Sunday night.

Medics rushed Fel, 63, and her 38-year-old daughter to Cooper University Hospital where Fel died while her daughter remained in extremely critical condition with life-threatening injuries, according to police.

The unidentified pickup truck driver remained at the scene and spoke to police.

It isn't clear if any charges will be filed in the case. Police however did say that the driver admitted to using an electronic device at the time of the accident. They are currently investigating whether distracted driving played a role in the wreck.

"That's one aspect," said Voorhees Police Captain Carmen Del Palazzo. "As well as the reports that they were walking against the traffic signal."

Friends say the mother and daughter were walking to CVS, which they did whenever the weather warmed up, and were only steps away from their destination when they were struck.

"It's just very sad," said Jacqui Canter, their neighbor. "It's a loss in the neighborhood."

The driver responsible or the death of my mother-in-law and critical injuries of my wife was identified by police as a 47 years old Samuel Destefano, of Tabernacle. Just wanted to remind you that they were struck at the cross-walk. The driver is charged with reckless driving, for using his cell phone in a vehicle, and not wearing a seat-belt. He goes to court today. I am shocked! No criminal charges yet! Could he get away with just a couple of traffic tickets?!!
