Karimah Crum, proud 14 year old niece of Master Sgt. Anthony Davis US ARMY, started ‘A Penny from the Heart’ after the American Red Cross of Central Maryland assisted her family following the death of the MSGT in Iraq in 2008 as he served on a humanitarian mission. The MSGT was killed two days before Thanksgiving. His sudden death left the family emotionally devastated. Karimah, with friends Kayla Ryan and Sydney Young are actively involved in this endeavor to raise awareness about the need for bereavement funds to families of our fallen military men and women. Bereavement funds would cover expenses such as actual transportation costs to travel to burial sites, food and lodging expenses incurred by military families because of necessary overnight stays at hotels/motels in order to attend funeral ceremonies, and costs incurred due to provision of floral arrangements, halls for a wake, and other necessities for a military member's funeral not covered by the military.
